5 Flat-Pack Mistakes That Quietly Ruin Furniture

Most furniture failures are not manufacturing defects. They are assembly shortcuts that only show up months later.

1. Overdriving with a drill

Particle board strips instantly. Drills are for pilot holes; final turns are by hand.

2. Skipping the back panel nails

That thin back panel is the structural brace that keeps a dresser square. Skip half the nails and the whole case racks.

3. Building on carpet

Soft floors let the frame flex while you tighten, so it locks in crooked. Build on a hard, flat surface.

4. Tightening in the wrong order

Everything goes in loose first, then gets squared, then gets tightened. Tighten as you go and the last panel will never line up.

5. Not anchoring tall pieces

Anything taller than it is wide gets strapped to a stud. Non-negotiable in a house with kids.
